Cloud Monitoring in the CMG E14, E15, E17 Studio Cluster Audio System

E15 Studio

The audio system upgrade project for the CMG E14, E15, and E17 studio cluster at CCTV headquarters has been completed. Our company provided core equipment along with system integration and technical support services.

Studio Cluster Audio Rack Equipment Room

The E14, E15, and E17 studios are CCTV's first studio cluster with a fully IP-based audio and video architecture. The E15 studio is designed for 4K ultra HD program production with an immersive audio monitoring environment. The E14 and E17 studios are designed for surround sound monitoring.

Using IP-based technology to build next-generation production and playout systems can readily solve problems that are difficult or impossible to address with traditional systems, while bringing many additional advantages.

The rapid growth of the IP and IT industries has brought new opportunities to the broadcasting sector. At the same time, the industry faces new challenges, such as achieving intelligent network awareness, manageability, and controllability, as well as ensuring signal synchronization.

This calls for a multi-vendor end-to-end network management system and an intelligent monitoring system to support operations and safeguard IP system performance.

With this in mind, we equipped the studio cluster with a full-featured Cloud Monitoring system to provide comprehensive detection, monitoring, and intelligent alarms for equipment, signals, and operational workflows.

Andas Monitoring System

The monitoring software custom-developed for this project includes not only standard monitoring functions but also AoIP audio stream analysis, which displays multicast audio stream levels across the network in real time for true visualization.

The IP audio stream intelligent analysis and detection module handles audio stream reception, parsing, audio VU meter calculation, real-time level bar display, and real-time buzzer alarms, with support for multiple alarm condition logic combinations.

As IP network equipment scales up and carries increasing workloads, users demand more from intelligent O&M for production IP networks, including higher-precision monitoring data for timely detection and rapid adjustment of microburst traffic. Monitoring must also minimize impact on device functionality and performance to improve equipment and network utilization. Building on Andas' expertise in broadcasting IP technology, particularly in SDN IP signal scheduling and monitoring/control software development over the past two years, this project addresses large-scale, high-performance network monitoring requirements by adopting Telemetry as a new monitoring approach alongside the traditional SNMP standard.

Andas SDN Architecture and Southbound Interface Telemetry Driver

Telemetry technology meets user requirements by enabling intelligent O&M systems to manage more devices, deliver higher-precision and more real-time monitoring data, and reduce the impact of monitoring on device functionality and performance. It provides the essential big data foundation for rapid network issue localization and network quality optimization, transforming network quality analysis into big data analysis and strongly supporting intelligent O&M needs.

Cloud Monitoring has earned wide recognition for its powerful detection and monitoring capabilities, intelligent user experience, intuitive interface, comprehensive data collection and analysis, and full-featured reporting. As one of the most critical auxiliary systems, Cloud Monitoring safeguards secure and high-quality playout for IP audio systems.

The E14, E15, and E17 studios all use the Lawo mc²56 MKIII as the main mixing console with the Nova73 as the processing core, and the Lawo mc²36 as the backup console. The monitoring systems use Genelec GLM series products. Microphones include Sennheiser 6000 series wireless systems and Schoeps wired microphones. Each studio audio subsystem also incorporates a range of peripheral processing equipment.

Lawo mc²56

The Lawo mc²56 is a large full-featured mixing console designed with an entirely new concept. It uses a 21.5-inch HD display as the meter bridge, offering larger and clearer level meters, richer display information, and smoother visuals. Touch operation is also included, allowing users to tap to open menus and directly perform bus assignments, meter settings, and channel source selections for quick and intuitive operation.

Sharing the same system hardware and a highly similar interface as the Lawo mc²56, the mc²36 integrates four Nova73 module cards within the console to form a compact all-in-one unit. It incorporates all functions of the mc²56/96 in a single console, saving space and ready to use out of the box. It is ideal for compact OB Vans (outside broadcast vans), mobile TV audio production, and mobile sound reinforcement systems.

The E15 studio was recently put into operation and participated in the live broadcast of the Tokyo Olympic Games, providing immersive audio content for new media clients.
